I Have A New Friend

I have a new friend. He is a legend. Only 14 men over the last 130 years have played more rugby matches for Wales. He has been the toughest of all. Americans find his position of Hooker amusing. But if your saw him scrummage and tackle you wouldn’t laugh!  He is the last coal miner to play for Wales. Garin played in 3 World Cups.  His finest hour was the beating of the World Champion Team South Africa (yes not long after Invictus) in 1999.

Here’s the thing. Garin may be the only known Christian to have attained this standard. I have prayed for 30 years for a Garin.  It’s quite a story how we got to team up. But I can say that we have a mutual team before even our beloved Wales. Jesus is our bond, our captain, our song.

There’s a story to follow, I expect. In the meantime Garin knows that I may remember as much about his games as he does. Mind you, he was the one who was being knocked about not me.

Garin is the Red number 2 in this video. Visit him @ www.garinjenkins.com

Best Story From Defeat

Last night Americans saw a young man Colt McCoy suffer a loss and then the microphone was on him. His Texas team had lost and they may well have won, after a strong start, had he himself not gone off injured early on.

How do you react to that without preparation and a swirl of emotions? We can learn much form him. First a moments quiet. Don’t speak if you don’t have any words yet!

The he briefly says how much he enjoyed football and then of course he uses a word to warm the heart: team. But my heart was warmed even more when he starts talking about Jesus as a natural part of who he is. No show, it just spills out because that’s who he belongs to.

I have watched dear friends go through greater losses this year. I have seen friends lose most of what they have through the stock market crash and other friends loss virtually lose all their financial resources in this brutal  financial era. I have also seen them handle it better than they know. Their faith has just spilt out and even bled as they bled. The community went from the magic Kingdom to Great recession. Teachers took big pay cuts, and vacations were cancelled.

I need to say “Well done” to our Church for so many have handled job loss and business freeze with such grace.

We will bounce back but I hope so a little wiser and determined to glorify the One who was with us at all times.

We have also lost loved ones and some have private losses. There are bad health reports out there and even very close. We carry griefs that many will never know about.

In a time of loss Lord please may Jesus spill out of us, because when there’s little to say He will always light up the occasion.

Postscript.

Well done to Alabama. Bryan Howell our student Minister at the North Campus will be pleased. But ironically the image of victory I have is the coach Nick Saban getting whacked on his shoulder with the increasingly daft “Gatoring” practice, then being interviewed in his greatest moment with a half pink shirt and no doubt wondering how to face the culprits afterwards! Hope they enjoyed the walk home. Winning has its responsibilities too. Funny how the best story came out of defeat.

Coyote

I thought Coyotes were only in movies and cartoons. In fact I needed spell- check to help me. But we have Coyotes in our sub-division.

We can now recognize their night-time cackle or scream or whine, or sarcastic insult. Then they set the dogs off. I assume the dog owners are deaf or immune to their own dog. I have not yet heard a sound like “Fido be quite”. That would help a little. We have both had disturbed sleep this week.

coyote

Next thought. I have been reading Acts 20 with care for some days. It is one of the “par excellence” passages on pastoral leadership. Paul is training the leaders to watch out for coyotes, or actually wolves who are actually humans, claim to be Christians, want to be leaders, but they are coyotes. These self- appointed leaders will “arise”. They have no legitimate claim. Their concern is not the vulnerable flock but themselves. They want power; they have no comprehension of leadership without themselves at the center. They are always a mess deep down but they act like they have all the answers. So they disturb the flock and feed their egos in their desire to be appreciated and recognized.

There will be some coyote followers, usually the naïve or the like-minded. Like attracts like. Some just enjoy the aura of the pseudo-leader who flatters to deceive. The coyote will not hesitate to harm the Ephesian elders. For they are the one thing that will stop the coyote. Hence the leaders are the target. But that is not the end of the story.

The coyote must be chased away; so Paul prepares this young leadership team with a plan:

“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.” v28

“Be shepherds of the church of God” v28

“So be on your guard!” v31

He teaches them to shoo-away the wolf-men, or wolverine.

There is no one way to deal with the problem. No rule book but His Word and His Spirit. Sometimes the coyote will flee at the first sign of opposition; bullies are insecure. Others are more stubborn. Some utterly persistent to the point of self destruction. Their identity is wrapped up with the latest fix. The appetite is ravenous. But they are never satisfied.

Sometimes you ignore it and leave, or wait, and then like Paul in Acts 16 decide that enough is enough and in one word end the folly.

I told a few friends about the coyotes. Some have offered to bring a shotgun suggesting that it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission!

We are praying for the nights to be quiet again. As a pastor I know that wild animals were a threat in bible times, as to David and our Lord. But we are warned of the enemy and of “wolves” As a shepherd I am ready to watch the sheep, on a well-taught state of alert, and must be ready to lay down one’s life for the sheep, unlike the hired hand or the wolf that devours.

Pray for leaders today and the Lord’s true flock and don’t feel sorry for the coyote.

Tell Your Story

On September 13th we have testimony day. We are baptizing in the creek that day and I trust that many will pray for a remarkable day of mass baptisms.

We also have “cardboard testimonies” in our services, with 50 testimonies broken down into 2-5 words. Not a word spoken.  Many Churches have done this to powerful effect. We trust that we’ll see stories of God’s grace: some recent, some young, some well tested.

Pray for God’s power at New Hope.

Pray that other churches will have a go as well.

We need a flow of testimonies. Your story and mine. My life verse is “I will not venture to speak of anything expect what Christ has accomplished in me” Romans 16:18

What would happen if we couldn’t find any such stories? Or if our own story has to go back 40 years with nothing since?
What if we had to trawl and search hard for any recent testimony of salvation?

Can you see how this will challenge us?

  1. Believe in the power of a testimony.
  2. Be ready with the gospel in your life to share with another.
  3. Be concise even in 2 words or 30 seconds (we often have to brief at first).
  4. Have an up-to-date-this-year-revision on your testimony.
  5. Expect God to save others and live accordingly.
  6. Rejoice on September13th not as mission accomplished but as mission begun.

Remember that it glorifies God and keeps the main thing before us.

Britain’s’ Got Talent

The Talent show is a big deal either side of the Atlantic. Simon Cowell (spell -check suggests cowbell!!) is the trans-Atlantic link. I actually agree with him most of the time and I like people who connect Britain and America!

I think that the average performer is better in the US. But three times in the UK a stunning performance has wow the world. Try safely “googleing” (spell check says boogying!) these three names.

susan-boyle-pic

Paul Potts (I played his winning song in church in 2007), Connie, seven years old and sings I will Love you as well as Whitney (Google those names together!), and now Susan Boyle a 47- year- old- never- been -kissed Scots lassie. Not really the kind of person you’d think would get 12 million “YouTube” hits in a few days and appear on Good Morning America. I’d love to know what you think of all of them.

I think the charm of each one was that we just didn’t expect it. The jewel was hidden. Maybe we see ourselves in them. We love the underdog to charge through the field of thoroughbreds. Paul was a car phone salesman and didn’t give up the day job till he had sung for the Queen and cut his first album.

I love this kind of video because it moves the heart and stirs the soul. We are inspired and maybe we wonder what talent we have. In Susan I see the little girl who was picked on in the playground and who the crowd laughed at when she said she‘d like to be like Elaine Paige (big Brit musical star and I think the first to sing Evita).

I am sure that you are a Paul Potts or a Susan Boyle.

We have a new series on May 3rd and throughout May. The title is inspired by Free Chapel called “It’s all in the house” it’s about you and me and Susan Boyle. Britain does have talent but so does everyone else. So do you lassie (or lad).

Don’t worry Simon won’t be nasty to you. The Lord will encourage you. Just be yourself today!! And dig up that talent.

…………………

By the way …the presentation International Treasure is the Sunday Services at both campuses on April 26th.Just thought I’d make that clear.

If any New Hope member wants to email to help me with the, shorter than usual message, I need help with this question …

What are the Pirates in your life? Short answers please.

Taxing Day

taxes

Yesterday was tax day and a big protest in Georgia designed to replicate the Boston Tea party, except it was not in Boston! I hope that everyone will be nice to the Brits because most of us are paying taxes and we get no representation! So I guess we are like the Americans in 1776! Even more so!!

I’ve had a hyper- intense week. But it was a privilege to lead the funeral for David Thrasher yesterday. David was very well know in the fitness community here in Fayette County, a cancer survivor and amputee. A former Methodist Minister, he went through some trials. Then he gave his life to Christ and was helped by my predecessor John Avant. He trained John physically while John trained David spiritually. We all need a coach.

He was in Church at New Hope on Sunday for our early service. We proclaimed the reality of heaven for the believer. Less than 24 hours later, David was there.

The moments of farewell today were painful for all especially for Lucy his wife and David’s four children. We grieved. But not without hope. We read Psalms 91 and 121.We remembered Easter. We proclaimed the risen Lord and the need for faith in Him alone. At the invitation (one always wonders if we’re being offensive at this point!) I prayed a salvation prayer and I guess at least 10 raised their hands saying that they had asked for forgiveness and asked Christ to fill all of their heart, in all of their ways, (Proverbs 3 v5-6).

So we had resurrection and new life today. I have been too busy this week. It is always stretching to lead a funeral that affects so many, but it was an incredible time and Jesus lives. Please pause and pray for Morgan the 10 year old son of David and Lucy who was a brave boy today.

The day David died he texted his Dad for the last time: “Bye Dad”. I trust that we will all meet again. Make sure that you’re there and in the meantime try giving God all of your heart. When we’re in heaven we can have a cup of tea, and no taxes .

Volunteer

Rich Terry

Uncle Sam called a nation to arms. There is no-one more passionate or committed than a volunteer. On Sunday we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of key volunteer minister, our Missions Minister – Rich Terry. Rich first served this country as a war veteran and now he has shown high level leadership and commitment to our Church. Great appreciation was shown in both our services to Rich and Vicki.

Some thoughts:

  1. We all need encouragement. Don’t forget to appreciate each other. We all need it more than we all realize!
  2. We all need to volunteer for what God has called us to do. The Body of Christ relies on your service. My life was changed because a Delta pilot was looking for God’s work while away on a trip in England!
  3. The Lord will provide. Rich is a contrast to the quack who tries to make money from ministry. The Lord is interested in your ministry and He is aware of your need.
  4. The Pharisees were professionals but Jesus was more interested in what was going on in the ranks of the amateurs, who would give their life to the cause! You’ll get more from a committed volunteer than a “clock- puncher”. The Pharisees saw everything through their own self-centered agenda and they limited service to what they could claim the credit for! Jesus invites us all onto His team.
  5. We are seeing more folks of all ages committed to serve and it is magnificent to see. Join the team.
  6. Just begin where you are, make yourself available and you’ll be see God work.
  7. Be part of this volunteer revolution and give Him all the glory.

Saul

armors

There once was a man called Saul, the Old Testament King by the way. He had tried to do God’s work, man’s way. One day he met a person who was the complete opposite to him. He was a young man with no worldly power; in fact he was derided by his brothers and did not have any official leadership training . One day not even his own father would support him as a leader. David did not qualify. Only thing is, God blessed him, because God can use people like that!

On the occasion I’m thinking of, David was about to do one of the great things in spiritual history. He was going to defeat the bully-giant who held the people in an arm- lock all day; all year long . No-one believed it could be done. Not Saul. Oh once he had seen God use him. But he was more concerned now with holding on to his position.

So Saul offers David his armor. He weighed David down. David did the one thing he could do; reject the clever counsel of a yesterday’s hero-king. The so called friendly advice would soon turn into jealousy and corruption and spears of revenge. David was about to do a difficult thing. But he did it without Saul’s stinky armor. Five smooth stones and a good arm were enough. But the battle was the Lord‘s. Don’t forget that today. I hope you’re ready to stand up to the bully, to break free from the reign of the enemy. But sometimes the danger is not the giant before us but the subtle “you-have-got -to-be-kidding” words of the Saul in your life. This is also true for your Church. We will not be ruled by the Saul spirit. It has to be a “God –thing” or we die. It is true in everything, even getting through the recession.

Don’t wear his armor. Put it away. Offend Saul. Then go slay the giant.

Give Thanks

We have so much to be thankful for.

Give thanks for the rain especially now with the pollen increasing! We have more than full reservoirs in Fayette County. Rain somehow symbolizes God’s blessing and the call to pray and receive from heaven. It can also come down so hard as to make us tremble at His power.

Give thanks for our health! Every family is always one phone call away from our lives being turned upside down; so we thank God for the breath he gives. This week I went to the funeral of Don, the father of a key New Hope family. We traveled to the North of Georgia to a classic country Church. I’m told that I got the full treatment. There were plenty of tears. But what a difference when a man has such a faith that he serves as a deacon for years with passion, love and diligence. As long as we have breath, why not serve the Lord?

Give thanks for the family of God who I have spent a lot of time with this week! I am speaking on “family ties “on Sunday in our series Jesus Moments, New hope is our family.  I am amazed at the love, service and gifts in our fellowship. We have 2 Campuses worth of family. (I think that the plural should be “Campii” by the way!). There are times in busy seasons like this when we are rarely all together at once as a family but it is a huge comfort when my girls are with the family of God.

Give thanks for the core of our faith. Jesus is the same yesterday; today and forever (Hebrews 13 v8). Yep give thanks now. This is the day that the Lord has made we will rejoice and be glad in it. Make a joyful noise even now!
